The Journey of Our Solar Vendors Association
How We Became Masters
YEAR 2022, Industries across the globe were fighting to regain their footing after the pandemic. For the Indian solar industry, the struggle was particularly pronounced. Major reasons were as follows,
"From few 32 or 36 members it grew to more than 600"
-
Perception of Luxury: Solar installations were seen as a non-essential expense, limiting interest in the residential sector.
-
Economic Strain: With households and businesses tightening budgets, investing in renewable energy took a backseat.
-
Interrupted Growth: Supply chain disruptions and project delays further hampered progress in an already challenging period.
The solar industry was experiencing medium gains and showing signs of stagnation. It was at this moment that the central government decided to intervene, taking bold steps to revolutionize the renewable energy sector.
The Turning Point :
A Push for Renewable Energy
To reduce carbon emissions (Netzero 2070) and align with the global push for sustainability (UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030), the Indian government turned its focus to renewable energy. The solar sector, with its immense potential, became a key pillar of this strategy. Alongside environmental goals, the government aimed to strengthen the Indian solar market by promoting the "Make in India" ideology, boosting domestic manufacturing and innovation.
The Subsidy Scheme :
A Catalyst for Growth
To encourage solar adoption in the residential sector, the government introduced an innovative DBT (Direct Bank Transfer) subsidy scheme. This initiative aimed to make solar installations more affordable for households, providing financial incentives and fostering widespread adoption, more importantly subsidies are directed to the end user.
The scheme was a game-changer, but it came with it’s own challenges— Centralized administration, complex registration processes, limited information channels, and technological hurdles—that made it difficult for integrators to navigate and for consumers to benefit from the envisioned outcome.
The Spark That Lit the Flame
During the first week of October 2022, as a big surprise that someone have put in great effort to bring all MNRE vendors under one roof through the new age media Whatsapp. Inviting over 35 strangers, to form a group. Those were among the first to register under MNRE as approved vendors.
Initially, the group’s purpose was unclear. Many of us were skeptical about its existence and doubtful about what it could achieve. Then came the pivotal moment: Mr. Jayakrishnan (creator of Kerala MNRE vendors whatsapp group) invited all members for a physical meeting on 10th OCT 2022.
From Informal Beginnings to Formal Recognition
I vividly remember attending that meeting, feeling both curious and uncertain. Everyone in the room was a stranger, but as the introductions began, it became clear that we all shared the same struggles and aspirations. Amid these challenges, we realized that working in isolation was not the answer. Collaboration is the key solution.
The meeting was transformative. We discussed the challenges of the subsidy scheme and how to navigate its registration process. For the first time, we had platform to share our experiences, clarify doubts, and support one another. It was during this meeting that the idea of forming an association took root—a group dedicated to sharing insights, resolving issues, and fostering growth for all members. We 35 members agreed to form a committee of eleven, Mr. Jayakrishnan: President, Mr. Reni: V. President, Mr. Biju: Secretary and me as Treasurer and others as Charter members with very important roles were assigned. Later few more executive members joined this esteemed group. The progress was breathtaking with collaboration of all esteemed members, Within 2
weeks, registration of the association was completed and the “MASTERS” was born...

I value membership because of the professional network for keeping up with both the Solar industry people and the work they do. I value the idea that there is a “greater good” of the whole as opposed to 300 isolated and disconnected vendors.
